I HATE GETTING SICK! 😷
Hate. Hate. Hate. Hate. Hate! Which is why when I travel I usually take every single bit of medication I can to ensure I don’t get sick/cure me of the death feeling. To date, every trip I have ever been on, I have been sick at one point or another (that Delhi Belly will hit ya one day!).
When I was in China in 2015 with my ex-boyfriend, the inevitable happened. We got sick.
We both were shivering because of the fever and sweating like crazy. The coughing would keep us both awake ALL NIGHT! It felt like it would never end.
Me, trying to play the hero ventured out into the big world of Xi’an, trying to get us some much needed medicine.
I walked around Xi’an for about an hour before I found a pharmacy looking building. I did a little happy dance (super proud of myself) and walked inside.
Aaaaand walked back out just as quickly.
I had TOTALLY forgot that Chinese medicine was worlds different to western medicine and my gosh was I shocked! There was starfish and seaweed and plants and tumbleweeds. I was like NOPE.
Now, don’t get me wrong, there is a definite place for herbal medicine and I know that it can do wonders!
But
We were SO sick that I just wanted to slam us both with some antibiotics/cold and flu. And there was none of that in this pharmacy.
With only a day to go until we were in Hong Kong- we held out, certain that we would get close to western medicine there.
Again, no such luck.
We got by with some panadol and a single box of general antibiotics that I had packed buuuuut it didn’t get better.
Unfortunately being so sick meant that we didn’t get to fully enjoy our week in Taiwan and stayed mostly to the streets near our hotel aside from venturing to the lantern festival.
So my HOT TIPS for you, when you’re thinking of going to China:
1. Take all medicines you MIGHT need (antibiotics, cold and flu, diarrhoea relief etc.)
2. Don’t share your medicine with your travel partner
3. If you’re sickness prone, make sure you know where the western medicine locations are in the city you’re visiting
Have you had an experience like this? Share it with me!
Happy Travels!
Good info. Your tips will be helpful. I am sorry to know that you got sick and couldn’t explore much there. You would do better next time.
