The Journey to Soong Kee’s Beef Ball Noodle Shop

Imagine being surrounded by the hustle and bustle of Asian streets, it feels like 100 degrees outside and this shop has 30 fans going crazy to try to cool you off, eating the most delicious traditional Malaysian noodles you could ask for.

That’s what you get at Soong Kee’s Beef Ball Noodle Shop!

I had been in KL for about 4 days and was really hankering for some good traditional Malaysian food. Funny thing about that, in the capital of Malaysia, Malaysian food is surprisingly rare and hard to come by!

So I started trawling the internet…

I had read about Soong Kee’s noodle shop on Lonely Planet and TripAdvisor and had convinced my boyfriend that our trip would not be complete without visiting this noodle shop. He kinda sighed, rolled his eyes and begrudgingly agreed to come with me.

Our hotel was right on the train line, so we jumped on the train at KL Sentral and went all the way up to a station called Masjid Jamek.

Maps.me (Great App! Try it here!) was telling me that it was about a 1km walk to the noodle shop from where I was so we started out walking in the direction it was telling us.

Interesting thing about KL (and what I’m starting to notice about a lot of Asian cities) is that they don’t often use street numbers, and if they do, they aren’t always in order. So all I had to go on was a street name for this noodle shop.

We got to the street and hada look around, nothing really looked like the photos we had seen online- we were looking for a big yellow sign and couldn’t spot any. So we started down the street.

This is when it starts getting dicey.

We walked for probably 10-15minutes just down this street and towards the end of the street we were noticing the large Indian population and nature of the shopfronts.

Now, imagine me, a blonde white girl, with a skinny, white, red headed guy. We stuck out like sore thumbs. And the indications and manner that the people in this part of town were giving to us, indicated it wasn’t really that much of a safe place for us to be.

Nevertheless, I wasn’t about to be deterred from the amazing noodles I had read so much about!

When we reached the end of the street, I still had not found my noodles. I was starting to get disheartened. My boyfriend was excited and suggested we turn back so we could get something quick- like Macdonalds he had seen opposite the train station.

I was disappointed and agreed.

BUT!

On the way back, as we approached where we had stopped earlier in the corner looking for that big yellow sign which I had read was the beacon for my noodles!

By this point I was getting hangry.

We walked past a kitchen where I saw people making soup and suggested we go in there to look at the types of soup they were making and I would eat there.

As we rounded the corner, I realised that it was the noodle shop we were looking for! I sat down and requested some noodles and was ecstatic when they arrived!

What I was unaware of, was that soup that accompanied my noodles. I tried it, tasted okay BUT had weird meat bits in it. I took a bite of the ball thing and as I did so the rest of the soup moved so I could see the other bits better- it was intestines. The balls were testicles. Urgh.

Safe to say I didn’t eat that soup- but the noodles were DELISH! I would highly recommend!

Have you eaten at this noodle shop?

Happy Travels!
