Thing-y-an…?
Wot?
Before I went to Myanmar I had read this word EVERYWHERE! On smart traveller they advise to be careful of delays because of ‘Thingyan’, my tour company was advising that mishaps may occur because of this ‘Thingyan’ thing. But what was it?
A dragon?
A militia group?
The way they say “horse” in the Myanmar Language?
Nope, Nope aaaannd nope.
Thingyan is the water festival held throughout South East Asia (Mainly Thailand and Myanmar), which signifies their new year-similar to Chinese New Year.
People literally stand in the street with water guns drenching each other. It legit sounds like a blast and I’m so bummed I missed it just barely this year!!!
The event begins with a very religious tone where Buddhist people pause for reflection and are reverent in their faith. However this mood moves to one of celebration on Thingyan eve where food, music and dance is encouraged by all.
New years day is when the splashing really starts!
Some of my friends are in Asia right now celebrating this awesome looking festival and if you have the opportunity to be in Bangkok or Myanmar for this festival, I would highly recommend it! Looks like a blast!
Happy Travels!
Please share your pics of Thingyan if you have them! I would love to see them!
